Feature

All these examples are taken from the book, Allowances: Dollars and Sense, by Paul W. Lermitte.

A Great Way to Have a Free Night Out!
(from pg. 31 in the book)
Hey let's go out tonight! But don't ditch your parents once you're out. Spending time with them is something they just might like!
  • Make it a family night. (You know who is in charge of family finances, hee hee)
  • Make it a weekly or monthly event.
  • Mom or Dad picks up the bill and you get to have a life! Bonus!

Case of the Broken Window
(from pg. 65 in the book) It's not a crime to make a mistake. It's only a crime if you don't learn from it!
  • Look after your stuff! The money it takes to buy things really doesn't grow on trees. Really!
  • Look after other's people stuff in just the same way!
  • Start with your own bedroom. It's your domain, so make it a place that looks great!

Don't Tie My Allowance to Chores or Achievements
(from Chapter 1) Should your allowance depend on work around the house or schoolwork? No!
  • An allowance is meant to teach you how to handle money.
  • You do chores because you are part of the family.
  • Doing well in school, music or sports is about building your confidence and talents. It's not about getting more money - SORRY!
Laugh All the Way to the Bank
(from Chapter 3)
Feeling sorry for yourself that you've got no cash?
  • Set aside 25% of your allowance in a piggy bank or bank account.
  • See it grow bigger and bigger.
  • Once you get in the habit of doing this, you'll be amazed at how much you can save and what you can do with it!
Do Your Homework Before You Spend Big Bucks
(from Chapter 4)
You saved and saved, bought your dream toy, and feel ripped off. Ouch!
  • Always spend time thinking and learning about the things you want to buy, before you buy, especially if they cost a lot of money!
  • Visit different stores.
  • Read magazines that review the product.
  • Surf the Internet with your parents to get more info.
  • Phone around to compare prices and guarantees.
  • Know what you're getting before you get it!
