Advice For Parents on how to teach your kids about money

Feature: The Importance of Goals

Some wise advice form parents from financial expert and author, Paul W. Lermitte.

Setting Goals

Traditionally the New Year begins with making New Year's Resolutions, but any time is a good time for that. I'd like to encourage you to make a resolution to help your kids do some goal setting. Articles on goalsetting and achieving dreams, written specifically for your children are posted in both the Kidszone and the Teenzone on this site, so have a look at them.

There is also a form called the Big Dreams Formula that can be found in the downloadable forms section, which can help your child get started.

Why is goal setting important?

Kids who set goals and achieve them see the world with a hopeful perspective.

They exude confidence and maturity as they test themselves and work hard to achieve their goals.

Some simple principles are set out in Chapter 19 of my book Allowances: Dollars and Sense. Here are a few of them for you to consider:

1. Encourage your kids to talk about their dreams, what they want to do in the future. Don't judge the practicality of those dreams-instead encourage them to dream big! Every great achievement begins with a big dream!

2. Support your child's unique talents and passions. If they love doing something, perhaps it's an area they should focus on.

3. Help your children to celebrate their achievements. Help them to see the progress they are making, and to enjoy the process of making a goal come true.

4. Teach your children how to set goals. Show them how to write down their goals and take action. For each dream, you child must learn to think of the many small steps it will take to achieve the ultimate goal. This discipline and understanding is a key part of growing up.

I hope these ideas will help you to get started with the goal-setting process (and maybe you could set a few of your own goals at the same time!). Set aside some time with your child today!
